Marvel phase 4 is officially over. The first list of new movies (and shows) follows Avengers: Endgame went to the end with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. So as Marvel fans gear up for the holidays and gear up for Phase 5, it’s only natural to reflect on the MCU’s final years.
Everyone has their own opinion on the best and worst entries in Marvel Phase 4, especially with so many options to choose from. But it seems so Guardians of the Galaxy Director James Gunn has a few opinions of his own — at least when it comes to the worst.
What happened – James Gunn is notoriously active on social media (at least by Marvel directors’ standards), which has led to some wild speculation about his plans for the DC Universe. So on Nov. 21, he responded to a tweet asking which Marvel movies or shows were worth revisiting before Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Specialwhich debuts on November 25th on Disney+.
In response, he noted that while there’s nothing “must do” (the holiday special pretty much stands on its own), both are worth revisiting Guardians of the Galaxy Movies along with the two most recent Avengers movies, as these “all contain small amounts of information referenced in the special”.
Notably missing from this list? Thor: Love and Thunderin which the Guardians featured prominently in several opening scenes after Thor joined the group seemingly at the end Avengers: Endgame.
Now, before I go any further, I want to make it clear that James Gunn probably doesn’t mind Thor: Love and Thunder. Gunn even consulted the Guardians of the Galaxy scenes to make sure they stayed in character.
So this tweet is probably just an accident. But maybe not.
A few other details suggest Gunn is actually a bit salty about how the Guardians were deployed gate 4. Is that a ridiculous theory? Yes. But is it fun? Also yes. So let’s have some fun in the spirit of the holidays.
James Gunn vs. gate 4
Okay, so Gunn left love and thunder from his list of films to watch beforehand Guardian Holiday Special, but does it really mean anything? To be fair, his lovable band of outcasts play a pretty minor role in the film. The only gate 4 It is confirmed that Gamora is still missing after the escape at the end endgame. That Holiday Special is able to recover this detail with a single line of dialogue. So maybe Gunn is just noting that Taika Waititi’s film doesn’t provide any new information about the Guardians as characters.
Then again, there’s one thing about the Thor movie did That may have annoyed James Gunn. love and thunder famously introduced two very loud and obnoxious magic goats. And it was later revealed that Waititi intentionally wrote the script to “stick James with some goats,” so Guardians of the Galaxy Star Chris Pratt.
However, after seeing it Guardian Holiday Special For verification purposes, I can confirm that there are no goats in this short film. (Or if they do show up, it’s in such a minor form that I missed them entirely.) In other words, Gunn seemingly refused to acknowledge Taika’s prank – although it’s still possible the goats show up in it Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Are those pesky goats reason enough to make James Gunn hate you? Thor: Love and Thunder? Maybe not, but combine that with the fact that Taika Waititi’s Thor sequel was anything but mediocre and it starts to make sense.
On the other hand, maybe I’m completely misunderstanding the situation. Maybe Gunn loves gate 4 and just had no more space on Twitter. We may never know, but when those goats show up Guardians Vol 3 then I will gladly admit that I was wrong.
