Ecotone, Europe’s leading advocate for organic, plant-based and fair trade food, has released its latest sustainability report and action plan, Food for Biodiversity.

The report agrees ecotoneit is B Corp recertification, Will the world’s highest rated global food company with 116.5 points – surpassing the previous score of 91.7 from 2019.

The average score for B Corp reviews is 50.9 with a certification minimum of 80. The benchmark reflects Ecotone’s commitment to the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability across the company and its family of purpose-driven brands. These include Bjorg, Bonneterre, Alter Eco, Clipper Teas, Whole Earth, Isola Bio, Ecocesta, Allos and Zonnatura.

The re-certification is a testament to Ecotone’s commitment to transforming the food industry, which is widely recognized as a key driver of biodiversity loss and climate change. It is sustainability report strengthened how global shifts in food choices can – and have to – reduce environmental impact through mainly two strong and simple pillars: organic and vegetable.

The comprehensive document details the progress Ecotone has made on its ‘Food for Biodiversity’ mission across all aspects of its operations, including reduced carbon emissions, advanced agri-chain practices and ingredient diversification outside of the nine currently overconsumed plant species around the world.

Guided by this mission, the results include:

  • 96% of It’s €724 sales is now vegetable. The company has been investing since 2019 35m in the production of plant-based beverages, organic tea and organic breakfast cereals and expansion.
  • A 79% organic portfolio with an emphasis on removing harmful pesticides and herbicides from other agricultural practices
  • A 9 percent reduction in Scope 3 carbon emissions through value chain initiatives that address carbon emissions from raw materials and transportation
  • Zero Scope 2 CO2 emissions by sourcing renewable energy
  • 64% alternative ingredients in his recipes, including experimenting with ancient grains.

These advances have seen Ecotone’s sales increase by 12% since 2019, with the company now spanning multiple countries in Europe and beyond with 1,600 employees and launching more than 100 new product innovations.

The report continues its focus on sustainable growth and also lays out Ecotone’s ambitious plans for further development up to 2025 and 2030. Key goals include:

  • 90% organic portfolio by 2030
  • 1/3 of the strategic raw materials come from agricultural chains that promote biodiversity
  • 66% alternative ingredients for more nutrients and more biodiversity
  • More than 95% of sales are plant-based
  • Another 16.6% reduction in Scope 1,2,3 emissions; 100% renewable electricity in offices and manufacturing facilities by 2025; 100% biogas at all production sites by 2030
  • CDP Forest ‘A’ rating by 2025 – with a zero deforestation policy published in 2023
  • Working towards reduction targets for nature within the framework of Science Based Target Networks (SBTN).
  • A shift to 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025

Speaking on the importance of Food for Biodiversity, Christophe Barnouin said: “This is a crucial time for us to address biodiversity loss and climate change. This comes at a time when Ecotone, as a leader in organic food production, presented the first Index of Avoided Pesticides (API) in June 2022 in collaboration with the Solagro Association.

Developed as a tool for companies similar to carbon measurement, the new indicator allows companies across the food sector to easily measure their pesticide footprint and develop appropriate reduction plans.

Ecotone encourages food companies to take a more holistic approach to measuring their environmental impact and calls for measuring pesticide footprints to be included in the next European Union Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
