Idaho police hold press conference ten days after college student killings

Officials in Moscow, Idaho, will hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon related to the ongoing investigation into the horrific murders of four local university students.

University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and 21-year-old Madison Mogen were stabbed and killed multiple times in the early hours of November 13, officials said. Police have not identified any suspects.

Moscow police received a call just before noon on November 13 with a report of a “person unconscious” at the King Road house. Several other people had gathered at the scene when police arrived, officials said.

Investigators have determined that all four were likely stabbed to death in their sleep sometime between 3am and 4am after returning home from a night out. Some of the victims appeared to have tried to fight back.

Two other housemates were in the downstairs home at the time of the murders, but were unharmed.

They are all believed to have been killed with a single “fixed-blade knife”, which has not yet been recovered.

Police said the victims split up into pairs earlier in the night. Chapin and Kernodle, both 20, were spotted at the Sigma Chi house on the university campus and reportedly returned to the house around 1:45 a.m. Chapin did not live in the house but was visiting, police said.

Goncalves and Mogen spent the night at a bar called The Corner Club and then went to a local food truck where they were spotted around 1:40am. They are believed to have been driven to their home by a “private party” at around 1:40 a.m. :45 p.m., police said.

The surviving housemates had also gone out that night but returned to the house by 1am, police said.

Police have said they evacuated both surviving housemates, the person who wheeled Gonsalves and Mogen out of the food truck and a person who was seen on surveillance video standing behind the women at the food truck.

Officials said late Thursday investigators had received information that Goncalves may have had a stalker. Investigators have “examined extensively” those reports and “followed up hundreds of pieces of information” relating to the stalker tip. As of Tuesday, they could not confirm the information or identify a stalker.

Moscow Police Department officials are asking the public to “share all outdoor surveillance videos taken on Sunday, November 13, 2022 from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. of businesses and homes in a specified area.” A map of the area is below.

Moscow Police Captain Roger Lanier said Sunday that investigators had received 646 leads since the attack and conducted over 90 interviews since then.

MPD had assigned four detectives, 24 patrol officers and five Criminal Investigation Support Staff members. The FBI has 22 investigators in Moscow, 20 agents in other areas of the United States, and two agents from the Behavioral Analysis Unit working on the case.

The Idaho State Police have deployed 20 investigators, 15 state police officers, a public information officer and forensic services team, and 15 uniformed police officers to the scene to assist other patrols.

A manhunt continues for the person or persons involved in the attack. In the meantime, the authorities have created a special website on the King Road attack.
