Idris Elba finds images of the first Luther film in the cold

Detective Luther leaves the streets of London behind in the first images of The Coming Luther Movie. This first look is published courtesy of Empire Magazine Luther shows how different the film will be from the hit series, as it rips the character out of his backyard and throws him into a completely different environment. “We’re really peeling the onion here because we had the time and scope to do it,” says Idris Elba. “There’s Neil too [Cross] much more, you know, Lutherland to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is like. We break out of the gloomy streets of London; we take it a bit outside of that. And that’s great. It feels like we are now stepping into a different life of the Luther experience.”


Of course, while Luther can walk in the snow (an image that’s incredibly harrowing), the film won’t change everything and perpetuate the darkness that has made the series so endearing to audiences. “It’s really dangerous to spend a lot of money on the expansion from TV to film and change the characteristics of the show for that moment,” Elba continues. “I wanted to make sure that even though we had a bigger budget, [we didn’t] distort the parameters of Lutherland too much. We’re stepping up the action and stepping up the stakes. but [Season 3’s] Man under the bed moment? It doesn’t cost you much money. Those moments are still intact.”

Of course while the Luther Film will clearly tell a different kind of story, the cardigan and red tie ensemble remains. Because honestly, it wouldn’t be Luther without her.

That Luther Film will debut on Netflix

That Luther movie will serve as a sequel to the television series of the same name, which has received acclaim from critics and viewers alike. The BBC series began in 2010 and follows Elba as the title character John Luther, a passionate detective who eventually befriends a psychopath and murderer whom he is unable to arrest due to a lack of evidence. Over time, the two grow closer and often work together to solve all sorts of horrific criminal cases.

Fans of the series have been clamoring for a film for quite some time, with Idris Elba confirming that production on the project was finally underway back in 2020. While plot details have been kept under wraps, the film’s cast has been confirmed and contains several clues. Elba is ready, by Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes, The Lord of the Rings) and Cynthia Erivo (Bad Times at El Royale, Genie: Aretha), whose characters are described as “double threats” to the titular detective. Erivo will reportedly play a fellow detective who will become “Luther’s nemesis,” while Serkis has been dubbed the “criminal villain of the story.”

Directed by Jamie Payne and written by Luther Creator Neil Cross, the Luther The film has no release date yet, but will debut on Netflix.
