Country legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette were both pioneering artists in their genres and are often referred to as the king and queen of country music. Both found early success on their own, fell in love, and were married from 1969 to 1975, leading them to create dozens of country hits as an unstoppable musical duo. Both have married multiple times throughout their lives (it was the other’s third marriage) and their life together backstage has become as famous as their life together in the spotlight.

Tammy Wynette was born on May 5, 1952 in the small town of Itawamba County, Mississippi. She eventually moved to Nashville with hopes of becoming a country music singer-songwriter in 1965, and the rest is history. Within three years, Wynette had massive success with number one hit singles “I Don’t Wanna Play House” and “DIVORCE,” and made a name for herself as a prominent female voice in the male-dominated industry. But it was her next number one single, Stand By Your Man, that she co-wrote Billy Sherill (played by David Wilson Barnes in the series), that would become her signature song and make her a legend. Married four times in her life, she met country music star George Jones in the late ’60s and they were married for six years. As the two became a successful duo with hit singles like “Golden Ring,” Wynette struggled with an addiction to painkillers while Jones battled alcoholism, and the couple eventually divorced in 1975. Wynette remained a staple in the country music genre amidst various addictions and married her fourth and final husband, George Richie (Stephen Zahn), 1978, before he died in 1998 at the age of 55.

Born on September 12, 1931, George Jones was known in the country music world for his deep baritone voice and hardened personality. His best known singles include “He Stopped Loving Her Today”, “The Race is On” and “Finally Friday”. Entering the music business in the 1950s, he was a lasting presence within the genre, releasing hits in every decade through the ’90s. Known for his vices and drinking problems, this caused a major problem in his marriage to Tammy Wynette, and he also became notorious for missing various shows because he was too drunk. After his divorce from Wynette, Jones married his fourth and last wife Nancy Sepulvadoin 1983 and became sober in 1999. Jones continued to sing and perform for the rest of his life and died in 2013 at the age of 81.
