ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Seven Michigan State football players are charged in post-game hand-to-hand combat in Michigan Stadium tunnel last month, according to a statement Wednesday from the Washtenaw County Attorney’s Office.

The most serious charge is against Khary Crump, who faces an assault charge. The charges against the six others are misdemeanors; five with aggravated assault and one with assault and assault.

The incident happened on October 29, when several members of the Michigan State soccer team beat up two Michigan players.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh had previously said he was expecting the suspended Spartans be prosecuted.

“At the University of Michigan, we appreciate the thoughtful, deliberate approach of the Washtenaw County Attorney’s Office to this unfortunate incident,” Michigan President Santa J. Ono said in a statement. “We would also like to express our concern for all the players involved, particularly those who have been injured. The University of Michigan will continue to fully cooperate with further reviews of this matter.”

The Michigan State athletic director and soccer coach did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Michigan State coach Mel Tucker suspended eight players – including Malcolm Jones, who is not charged with a felony – for their role in hand-to-hand combat.

Harbaugh said defender Gemon Green was hit by a Spartans player, sparking the riot shortly after the Wolverines defeated their state rivals, and that teammate Ja’Den McBurrows was attacked as he tried to help.

Green suffered a concussion that kept him out of a game before returning to Michigan’s 34-3 win over Nebraska.

Michigan increased security presence in and around the tunnel, preventing Wolverines from entering it until every Nebraska player left the field at halftime and after the game.
