And Soderbergh wants to go Channing Tatum‘s “Magic Mike” Lane to get the biggest, most sensational farewell. How does he deal with it? How about ending “Last Dance” with a 30 minute dance sequence? “We wanted to blow up dancing in a big way,” the director said in a new interview with Empire. “We have this dance number with Channing and salma [Hayek] at the front. And then the last 30+ minutes of the film is just this huge dance sequence.” In the upcoming film, Tatum’s Mike travels with Hayek’s Max to develop a musical based on his striptease exploits at a prestigious South London theater. As you can imagine, it ends in a rather seductive dance between the two.
But Soderbergh wanted to do something really special to end the Magic Mike trilogy. “My job is, how do I make each one unique? I can’t shoot them all the same way, I have to come up with a different approach for each dance,” Soderbergh explained. “And that was really the challenge.” Luckily, a theatrical setting gave Soderbergh plenty of ideas to spice things up. “We stage all of the sequences in this lovely old theater, the Clapham Grand,” the director continued. “It was fun, there is no bad perspective in this place…”
“Magic Mike XXL“Saw the World of 2012”Magic Mike“Get bigger, bolder and more sophisticated. And while Soderbergh only served as editor and cinematographer on the 2015 film, he wants Last Dance to feel like a completion of what the first two films began. “The first film was a pretty straight forward portrayal of a set of characters existing in a particular milieu that hasn’t changed since it was made,” Soderbergh explained. “And the second film pushed out a bit to talk about what women are looking for in a night of exploring fantasy and sexuality — and how to maintain a sense of mystery while still existing in an environment where things are like permission and consent are paramount?” Of course, Soderbergh sees his third film as a greater celebration of this developing dynamic.
“The third film really dives into it a lot more, in part because it’s the first time we’re seeing Mike in a relationship,” Soderbergh said of Last Dance’s male-female push-pull. “It just allows for a dynamic and a range of discussions that we didn’t have access to before Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” And audiences will be more than happy to have those discussions in the theater rather than streaming them and filming them at home . Magic Mike’s Last Dance hits theaters everywhere on February 10, 2023, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
