triangle of sadness is a 2022 comedy film written and directed by Ruben Ostlund With Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean, Woody Harrelson and Zlatko Buric. The film won the Golden Palm In the Cannes Film Festival 2022.
Hierarchies are turned upside down, norms questioned in this interesting and humorous film, which does not shy away from commenting on human follies and societal norms.
Fashion star couple and influencers Carl and Yaya are invited on a luxury yacht cruise exclusively for the top 0.9% of the wealth hierarchy. On board they will meet some interesting characters: Dimitry, the Russian oligarch and his wife Vera, the elderly British couple Clementine and Winston, the arms dealer, and the lonely tech billionaire Jarmo. At the helm of the crew and yacht is the rather unbalanced Captain Smith. What appears first instagrammable ends catastrophically, the survivors are stranded on a desert island and fight for survival.
You know those people who can’t dress up to fake stupidity? Well, that’s exactly what Triangle of Sadness torments, no matter how vulgar or grandiose or extreme the situations portrayed may be. It is precisely this play of opposites that makes this film incredibly balanced.
Triangle of Sadness is a very intelligent satire about how stupid we all are when we’re being deprived of millions in fortune or followers or whatever, and given the circumstances, we might as well be enjoying ourselves beyond that…. all.
A film that is as transcendent as it is inconsequential, while being stupid and flawed, sometimes in the script itself or in the scene itself. With its touch of surrealism and constant tongue in cheek, it knows all too well how to smile at the supposedly sophisticated and cultivated cinema with satire and in doing so, using a powerful scalpel of cast-aside characters, takes the form of that very satire thrown into the abyss of surrealism.
A film that impresses with its idiosyncratic style and that always knows how to take you on its own terrain. It’s a playful film that knows how to play and eventually, like any good player, wins the match the viewer knew all along that they were going to lose.
There are some wonderful scenes and unforgettable dialogues such as the dining room scene where only the captain (Woody Harrelson) the oligarch (Zlatko Burić) are the few who ‘stand’ amidst the storm, exchanging quotes from prominent capitalists and communists alike. Or Carl (fantastic portrayed by Harris Dickinson) with his old love interest Neurotic dynamics with Abigail (interpreted so well by Dolly de Leon).
A film that has it all, outstanding script, acting, sharp comedy
Great, different, entertaining and rich.
“What’s special about Östlund is that it makes you laugh, but also makes you think. There is meticulous precision in the way he constructs, blocks and executes scenes.”
Peter Debruge: Diversity
“Very funny (…) it’s also the perfect comedy for our time (…) For most of the film, Östlund’s combination of sledgehammer and scalpel is a delight.”
Phil de Semlyen: Time out
