This is the page we use to be transparent with you about ELi’s finances and our annual campaign aimed at providing reliable and detailed news from East Lansing in 2023.
How is the campaign going?
We hired one Target of $175,000 (more on that below) and so far we have raised a total of $40,852 including matching for past donations, annual pledges (with adjusted annual commitment), and an anticipated $3,000 grant from the Knight Foundation.
This is killing us 23% of the way to the goal.
Our goal is to fill ELi’s “water tower” so that we have saved enough to “clear news” next year. Because we have funds to match, your contribution will be doubled for every donation, filling our tower twice as fast.
Together with the main donors from NewsMatch and ELi, we have approximately $50,000 in match funds available for this annual campaign. Every donation you make is DOUBLE with a match. Each monthly commitment you make is matched against the annual rate. So a monthly commitment of just $20 brings us $240 closer to our annual campaign goal!
But we need you to donate before the end of the year or commit to a monthly contribution. Otherwise we risk losing match funds available to us.
How can you make a tax-deductible contribution?
On this page you will find all the ways you can donate. Because we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, all of your contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. For all contributions to ELi in 2022, we will send you a receipt in January.
Are subscriptions matched for East Lansing Insiders?
Yes. You can subscribe to East Lansing Insider here for $10/month or $100/year. This allows you to receive the news by email faster than it is available on our website. And it will bring us a match.
New donors can give us an extra bonus!
If we attract 100 new donors through this campaign, NewsMatch will give us an additional $1,000 bonus. At the moment, We have 13 new donors, so we need 87 more by December 31st. Any amount donated will count towards this (even as little as $10) as long as a donor is new to our system. This includes new donors who choose to subscribe through East Lansing Insider.

How much money does ELi need to keep the news going?
For 2023, we estimate that we will need $175,000 to run the entire operation. As a result, we’ve set this goal for our 2022 annual campaign for ELi: $175,000 in donations, grants, awards, and annual commitments. Below you can see our budget.
We started this campaign with approximately $50,000 in savings. That gives us a cushion. But if we don’t raise the full amount, we have to devote energy to fundraising instead of fully focusing on reporting. We would much rather report than spend time fundraising.
What is Eli doing?
East Lansing Info is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing timely, impartial, factual local news from East Lansing and has been doing so since September 2014. Our team brings general community news – about local businesses, arts and cultures, parks and recreational opportunities – but at the heart of our work is serving as an informational safety net for the people of this city.
We are the only news organization reporting regularly on the East Lansing City Council, Planning Commission, Downtown Development Board and East Lansing School Board, and we are the only news team doing investigative work on municipal finances and taxes, policing, major redevelopments, environmental issues and more.
