Dear Lizzo, the highly anticipated HBO Max documentary that follows Lizzo’s journey from her humble beginnings to mainstream success, will arrive on HBO Max and be available to stream beginning Thursday, November 24, 2022 at 3 a.m. ET / midnight PT . It comes bundled with 2 of the streamer’s Christmas movies.
With Lizzo as Executive Producer, the documentary will be directed and co-produced by Doug Pray, known for exploring unique subcultures in his films. His work includes documentaries such as hype! (Seattle grunge scene), Scratch (DJ culture), shame (graffiti culture), surfing way (the Doc Paskowitz family) and The Defiant Ones (Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine).
HBO Max Dear Lizzo sheds light on the singer’s early years
The trailer for Dear Lizzo was released on November 10, 2022, and the opening voiceover makes it very clear that it’s about music. It starts with Lizzo saying:
“No matter what part of my story you come from, I’m always chasing the music.”
The trailer gives us a glimpse into their early years and is spliced with footage from live concerts and studio sessions. There’s also a glimpse of an interview with Lizzo, in which she addresses her insecurities as a little girl, the obstacles she faced, and the lack of opportunities for “a fat, black girl who rapped, sang, and played the flute.” .
The trailer maintains an upbeat tone while also exuding the positivity Lizzo is known for. The official synopsis of Dear Lizzoaccording to HBO Max, reads as follows:
“Every once in a while, an artist not only changes the music, but also the culture. Lizzo did both. This is the journey of a groundbreaking superstar who has become the movement the world needs just for being herself.”
It goes on:

Dear Lizzo is the singer-songwriter’s second digital release and comes after the reality show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrlswhich premiered on Prime Video on March 25, 2022. Lizzo spoke about the documentary in a WarnerMedia press release in May, saying:
“Growing up I never thought I would experience all the things that I have achieved in my life and I’m just getting started. I’m so excited to be able to share and relive my journey with my fans and HBO Max.”
Highlighting the events the documentary would cover, she said:
“From ‘Cuz I Love You’ to my dramatic world tour, loving and losing love to creating my new album ‘Special’ you will all see the amount of time, patience, blood, sweat and tears that went into the process . It takes ten years to become an ‘overnight hit’ and hopefully I can inspire other young creatives to keep going.”
